Friday Olokor, Abuja
The internal crises rocking the All Progressives Congress deepened on Friday with the Concerned APC Members Forum warning the Mai Mala Buni-led caretaker committee not to elongate their tenure in office beyond December.
While calling on the committee to stop the proposed membership registration which they described as fraudulent, the forum tabled a six-point demand and threatened to proceed to court for interpretation of the party’s constitution.
The forum’s spokesperson and former Benue State APC governorship aspirant in the 2019 elections, Ogenyi Okpokwu, said these during a press conference he addressed on behalf of the Concerned APC Members in Abuja.
He told the state chairmen of the APC “not to join the illegal registration” because it had been tailored for their removal from office in the long run.
Okpokwu said, “The caretaker committee should begin the process of convening the national convention in December with immediate effect. All the permanent party membership cards that were printed and submitted to the party’s national secretariat by APC data centre for onward distribution to our members in the wards, local government areas and states should be distributed immediately. In case they cannot find it, they should request it at our data centre.
“The incoming National Working Committee should handle the updating of the new register if we so need to update one. If our demands are not met, we will have no option but to approach the court for interpretation of our constitution as it was done before you came on board and we will occupy our secretariats. The party belongs to us all.
“The most senior member of sacked the (Adams) Oshiohmole-led NWC should be returned as chairman because that is what our party constitution says. We call on state chairmen of the party not to join the illegal registration because it is tailored for their removal from office in the long run.”
Meanwhile, the Concerned APC members have dismissed the planned registration, update and revalidation of the party’s membership register as diversionary.
Spokesman for the group, Abdullahi Dauda, said this in an interview in Abuja, on Friday.
The national caretaker chairman of the APC who is also the governor of Yobe State, Buni, had on Thursday, announced plans by the party to begin a nationwide registration, update and revalidation of its membership register across 119,973 polling units and 57,000 voting points.
However, Dauda dismissed the planned registration exercise as a ploy to buy time in order to extend the committee’s tenure beyond the six months earlier agreed by the National Executive Committee of the party during its last meeting in June.
