Dr Madewa Adebajo, Medical Director, Alimosho General Hospital, Igando, Lagos on Thursday tasked Nigerians on healthy lifestyle to avoid Cavrdiovascular diseases.
Adebajo gave the advice at a programme organised by the hospital to commemorate the 2020 World Heart Day.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that theme for the 2020 World Heart Day is “Use Heart to Fight Cardiovascular Disease”.
He said cardiovascular diseases still remained the number one causes of death globally according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
“Discover what makes you happy, go for it, avoid sitting idle and take part in meaningful activities.
“All these will ensure a lifestyle of healthy diet that is very vital for the heart,” the medical director said.
Also, Dr Akinbo Akindeji, a Consultant Cardiologist at the hospital, said that individual lifestyle was a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases.
Akindeji noted that the intake of highly salted food, saturated fat, high consumption of alcohol, smoking, hard drugs and lack of exercise were various lifestyles which leads to heart-related diseases.
“Chest pain, tiredness, productive cough, abdominal swelling among others are symptoms of a heart in crisis.
“A poorly controlled diabetes, hypertension, congenital heart disease are some of the common causes of heart-related ailments,” he said.
According to him, patients with cardiovascular diseases can be cared for through pharmacological and non-pharmacological care.
He advised individuals with cardiovascular disease to adhere strictly to hospital appointment and ensure a regular blood and sugar check
“The care for the heart entails a lot part of which are pharmacological and non-pharmacological.
“Engaging in a healthy way of life; maintaining healthy weight, regular exercise, reduction in salt intake, consumption of more vegetables, fruits and indepth happiness promotes heart health.
“Care for our heart is of utmost importance in this time of COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.
NAN reports that a free cholesterol test for staff and patients was conducted coupled with an exciting energetic dance activity and presentation of gifts to all participants.
