The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria has called for constitutional Amendment to provide for unicameral legislature in Nigeria instead of the current bicameral legislature in practice in the country.
The Group made the call in llorin, the Kwara capital, on Friday in a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, in commemoration of the nation’s 60th independence anniversary.
According to the statement, the bicameral legislature of Senate and House of Representatives is too expensive for the country to bear considering the harsh economic situation of the nation
The statement also advocated the removal of all provisions in the country’s laws that legitimise severance packages for political office holders after the end of their tenures, saying this was not done in other parts of the world.
The statement expressed concern at what it identified as materialism, corruption, political “godfatherism’’ which it noted were firmly rooted in the country.
It charged Nigerians to be patriotic to get the country on track.
