Hope is the New Hell: When Religion Teaches You to Die Slowly

Date:

🕳️ “Swimming in Holy Water: When Hope Becomes a Death Sentence”

By ADEDAYO ADEWALE JNR| Exclusive

“They didn’t die because they were weak. They died because they were taught to wait for a hand that never came.”

In the 1950s, a scientist named Curt Richter placed rats in jars of water to see how long they would swim before drowning. On average, they gave up after 15 minutes — not because they were tired, but because they saw no escape. But here’s the twist: when he rescued them, dried them, and put them back in, the same rats swam for 60 hours.

Why?
Because now they had hope.

Not strength.
Not skill.
Not a new exit.
Just the belief that help might come again.

It’s a haunting lesson:

Hope can keep you alive — or make you drown slower.

🙏🏽 Religion — The Nigerian Version

In Nigeria, we don’t just swim in water.
We drown in holy oil, praying for a rescue that never left the pulpit.

We die every day — not because God failed us, but because we outsourced thinking to men in robes.

We are the rats.
And religion has become the jar.

🔥 When Brains Could Have Saved Lives

Let’s talk about a few:

1. The Woman Who Bled to Death in Church

She had a miscarriage. Instead of rushing to a hospital, they laid her before the altar, anointing her with oil and casting “the spirit of miscarriage” out. She died. Not because help wasn’t available — but because her “hope” was in the wrong place.

2. The Parents Who Let Their Child Die of Seizures

Doctors told them it was epilepsy. The pastor said it was a marine spirit. For three years, they poured anointing oil down his throat and beat him during seizures, “casting out the demon.” He died choking on oil.

3. The Man Who Refused Surgery for a Brain Tumor

He was told the Holy Spirit would “burn it off.” He fasted, prayed, tithed his last kobo. The tumor grew, and by the time his “faith” cracked, it was too late. He died with hope in his eyes and a Bible on his chest.

🧠 Hope Without Strategy Is Suicide

The rats swam longer because they believed rescue was coming.
But what if Richter never reached in again?

What if hope was just a lie that made them struggle longer in vain?

This is the tragedy of blind faith. Not faith itself — but the kind that replaces action with waiting.

✝️ Faith ≠ Foolishness

If God gave us brains, why do we keep outsourcing decisions to prophets in shiny suits?

If God gave us science, why do we treat hospitals like afterthoughts?

If Jesus healed the sick, why do we call hospitals “a lack of faith”?

Hope should push us to swim toward the shore, not wait for angels with floaters.

🪞A Final Thought

Religion, in its purest form, is meant to uplift.
But in Nigeria, it’s become a tool of manipulation, teaching us to die with hope instead of live with sense.

We don’t lack miracles.
We lack courage to walk away from pastors and swim for ourselves.

✊🏿 UHURU VERDICT

Until Nigerians learn that hope without action is a form of slow death,
We will keep burying our loved ones in shallow graves —
Right beside the church they thought would save them.
