The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) distributed relief materials worth millions of Naira to 186 victims of windstorm disaster in Osun on Thursday.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the relief materials were distributed to victims in Osunjela town in Atakumosa West Local Government Area and those of Esa-Oke town in Obokun Local Area of the state,
NEMA Director-General, Retired AVM Muhammadu Muhammed, noted that the disaster, which occurred on April 30, destroyed properties and means of livelihood of the victims.
He said soon after the incident, officials of NEMA were despatched to impacted areas for on- the-spot assessment to determine the gravity of damage and to make recommendations for timely intervention.
“We are here today on behalf of the Federal Government to commiserate with the good people of Osunjela and Esa-Oke towns over the unfortunate windstorm disaster which destroyed properties and means of livelihood.
“The relentless windstorm in the country is not only devastating, but a clog in the wheel of progress and economic development of our communities.
“Let me remind us that the recent unpredictable weather conditions associated with climate change in the country and indeed throughout the world have caused adverse ecological situations across nations,’’ he noted..
He assured that the Federal Government would continue to assist victims of natural disasters all over the country.
Muhammed also commended the Osun State Emergency Management Agency (OSEMA) for effective disaster management.
He was represented at the occasion by Mr Segun Afolayan, NEMA Head of Operations for Ekiti, Osun and Ondo States.
In his remarks, Mr Tajudeen Adabanija, OSEMA General Manager, thanked the Federal Government for providing relief materials to victims in the two communities.
Adabanija said that the relief materials would go a long way to bring succour to the victims.
He admonished all Osun communities to desist from dumping waste products in waterways, and against building houses at river boundaries.

In his remarks, the traditional head of Osunjela community, Chief Abdulraham Muhammed, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for the gesture shown to his community, saying it would be of great benefit to the victims.
The disaster affected 105 households in Osunjela and 81 households in Esa-Oke.
Relief materials distributed included nails, roofing sheets, blankets, mattresses, mosquito nets, cement, rice, beans and tomato puree, among others.
