Nigeria @ 60: NOA wants renewed patriotism

Date:

The Director General, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr Garba Abari, has called for a renewed spirit of patriotism among Nigerians as the nation turns 60.

Abari made the call on Thursday in Abuja, in a message to mark Nigeria’s 60 Independence Anniversary.

He urged Nigerians to use the celebration to reflect on the fact that the country’s greatness lies in their hands.

“At 60 years of independence, Nigeria has come of age and must fully take her place as the giant of Africa, not just in words, but in reality.

“It will take the unreserved loyalty of our people to our fatherland for this to be.

“We must rethink our overreaching inclinations to our sectional, tribal and religious cleavages and embrace more firmly our nationhood and collective brotherhood as one united people.

“We can forge a clear path for a better Nigeria,”he said.

According to him, the next decade for Nigeria should be devoted to true national rediscovery and rapid development.

This is in the spirit of collectivism as envisioned by the nation’s founding fathers, he said.

Abari said that NOA had launched citizens’ video competition on social media in a campaign tagged ‘#4ABETTERNIGERIA’ .

He said this was to attract youths to submit and circulate self-made videos on issues of patriotism and national ethics.

Abari said that prizes would be won by the participants.

He said it was part of the agency’s contributions to renew nationalistic fervor among Nigerians as the nation marked its 60th independence anniversary.
