The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Kaduna State chapter, says it is set to embark on a sensitisation campaign to end open defecation in the state.
The State Director, NOA, Alhaji Galadima Soba, disclosed this on Friday in Kaduna in a statement issued by the Agency’s Information Officer, Abubakar Argungu, during a training session for Community Orientation and Mobilisation Officers (COMOS).
The statement said it was worrisome that one in every four Nigerians, about 47 million people practice open defecation as contained in a report by WHO and the UNICEF.
It explained that the report also showed that less than half of Nigerian households have their own toilet facilities, “this unfortunate development is unacceptable in this modern age and time.
The statement said the training was done in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, in a deliberate effort to actualise Executive Order 009 signed by President Muhammadu Buhari.
It said the purpose was to achieve an open defecation-free environment in the country by 2025.
The statement said critical stakeholders such as the state Ministry of Environment, the Kaduna Environmental Protection Agency, the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, UNICEF and the Kaduna field office attended the programme and provided expertise and experienced personnel.
It also made it known that pursuant to the agency’s mandate in the area of attitudinal transformation and value reorientation that the NOA, through the COMOS initiative, is set to sensitise the entire country, particularly the grassroots people.
The statement added that the trained COMOS of the Agency are set to be on the field immediately to sensitise and encourage the general public, particularly at the grassroots, to ensure the provision and usage of toilet facilities in their homes.
