Primate urges political leaders to shun greed, make national interest a priority

Date:

Most Rev Henry Ndukuba, the Primate, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), has called on political office holders to shun greed and place national interest above personal considerations.

“Office holders must avoid greed and place national interest above selfish interests. It is the only route to peace, unity and national development,” Ndukuba said at a special service to mark Nigeria’s 60th Independence anniversary on Thursday in Abuja.

He said that the country’s founding fathers built a solid foundation, but regretted that subsequent administrations failed to build upon it.

Ndukuba commended the current administration’s giant strides in the areas of economic development and the fight against corruption, and urged office holders to work toward improved living conditions for ordinary citizens.

The Anglican Primate stressed the need for the Federal Government to focus more on industrialisation, job creation and even distribution of resources.

”As it is now, the son of the ordinary man has no hope in this country. We must give hope to the ordinary man by doing the right things to avoid crises in future.

”We must start making plans to accommodate young people. Our universities produce millions of graduates every year, but there are no adequate plans to engage them. We must change this narrative,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria , reports that the 60th Independence day service featured special prayers for leaders at all levels, and for divine intervention in the challenges confronting  the country.
