Lagos Declares State of Emergency on Waste Management

Date:

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has declared a state of emergency on waste management across the state.

The governor made the declaration on Wednesday during an inspection of the Olusosun dumpsite in Ojota.

Sanwo-Olu acknowledged that waste collection has slowed in several parts of Lagos. He partly blamed the problem on the inability of some Private Sector Participation operators to meet their obligations.

The state government said it is taking immediate steps to improve waste collection and disposal.

Waste compaction is already taking place at the Olusosun and Solous 3 dumpsites. The government also plans to improve the number of trucks and disposal points available.

Sanwo-Olu warned residents against indiscriminate dumping as the government works to clear accumulated refuse.

The situation has become a major environmental and public health concern in parts of Lagos.
