Bulgarian businessman Iliyan Filipov was shot dead in the city of Plovdiv early Wednesday, according to Bulgarian authorities and local media.
Filipov was the founder and manager of PIMK, one of Bulgaria’s largest transport companies, and was majority shareholder and president of top-flight football club Botev Plovdiv.
Bulgarian police said they received a report of a shooting at about 1 a.m. and confirmed the man’s death at the scene.
An investigation into the killing has been opened, while police have blocked major entry and exit points around parts of Plovdiv as investigators pursue possible leads.
Botev Plovdiv later issued a statement mourning Filipov and highlighting his involvement in the club’s development.
