Jordanian authorities say the country’s air-defence systems intercepted 18 of 20 ballistic missiles launched from Iran toward Jordanian territory.
The two missiles that were not intercepted landed in open areas away from populated locations, according to Jordan’s armed forces. No casualties were reported.
Jordanian authorities said debris and shrapnel fell in several areas and warned residents not to approach suspicious objects.
The attack came amid escalating hostilities between Iran and the United States and wider tensions involving regional states.
Jordan has repeatedly faced the challenge of preventing the regional conflict from spilling into its territory. Its geographical position places it between several countries directly affected by the fighting.
The Jordanian military said it remained on a high state of alert and continued operating radar, early-warning and air-defence systems.
The incident adds to the growing evidence that the conflict is creating direct security risks for countries beyond Iran, Israel and the United States.
